A rebellious love story of a Sikh Man who is a truck driver and a Muslim Woman coming from an aristocratic family during the period of the Indian Partition of 1947.
The movie ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ was released on 15 June 2001. This movie is a Hindi-Language, romantic period action-drama film directed by Anil Sharma and produced by Nitin Keni, Bhanwar Singh, and Bhaumik Gondaliya. The plot was set around the partition of India in 1947. ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ was released worldwide and grossed over ₹768.8 Million in India alone. The movie further was announced to be the Highest-grossing Hindi film since ‘Hum Apke Hai Koun’. It is also the second-most-watched Hindi film in India since the 1990s.

The storyline begins during the Partition of India of 1947, when Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims are against each other. After the massacre of Sikhs and Hindus by the Muslims that happened in West Punjab, Pakistan, the Sikhs and Hindus decided to take their revenge by killing Muslims in East Punjab. And one of the Sikhs among the crowd was Tara Singh (Sunny Deol). While the mob near the railway station, killing many Muslims in their way, Tara stops in his tracks when he recognizes a particular Muslim girl who is currently running away from the mob. Tara saves her immediately and fights his Sikh brothers, who were trying to kill her.
He asks them to stay away from her and applies his blood to her forehead, making her his Sikh wife. He then leaves with the girl in his truck, and the movie moves to a flashback, where he meets the girl for the first time. The Muslim girl named, Sakina (Ameesha Patel) came from an aristocratic family, and Tara met her during her college days. Tara wanted to be a singer and had sung at Sakina’s college, that was where the friendship between the two started.
When the flashback ends, Tara brings Sakina to his house and states that the blood he had applied as a sindoor meant nothing and that he had done so only to save her.
After some time had passed, Tara and Sakina traveled toward Lahore so that she could enter Pakistan and leave Punjab. But as they reach the border, Sakina confesses her love for Tara and requests him to stay married to her, to which Tara agrees.
They were living happily for quite some time as they had gotten married and had even become parents to a baby boy, but everything changes when Safina comes to know about her parents being alive.
