Raees (translated into English as Rich) is a 2017 Indian Hindi language action film directed by Rahul Dholakia and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment. The star cast of the movie includes Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Mahira Khan. Raees is said to be based on the criminal Abdul Latif’s life. However, the filmmakers have denied the claims made in this context.

The film was released on 25 January 2017, just before India’s Republic Day weekend. It received overall positive reviews from critics, who appreciated the performances of Khan and Siddiqui, production design, cinematography, and visual effects. It was a huge commercial success at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2017 until it was outdone by Hindi Medium. Raees, not to anyone’s surprise, was also the most pirated Hindi film of 2017.

The film’s soundtrack also received over 1.6 billion streams on YouTube. The film received five nominations at the 63rd Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor for our very own King Khan. It became the 43rd highest-grossing Indian film of all time.

Storyline of the Movie Raees

The film begins in the 1960s (quite evident from a newspaper).

Raees, a very sharp boy, lives in Fatehpur, Gujarat, a dry state, and gets tangled in the illegal liquor trade from a young age. He uses his mother’s viewpoint: no occupation is low and no religion greater than any profession as a mechanism of self-deception.

Along with his best comrade, Sadiq, he starts working for a local gangster, Jairaj — who prefers Raees as he comes up with novel ideas for trafficking. As his power and influence grow, he decides to part ways with Jairaj and takes the help of a crime boss, Musa bhai, to start his own business.

He gains immense popularity (just as SRK commands in the outside world as well) in his community: he provides them liquor, employs them for receiving and delivering orders, and thus enjoys political support from both the Chief Minister and Pashabhai, the leader of the opposition.
